A dear friend needs your comfort and strength and mercy. Please be with her and her family in this time of difficulty.
Aidan and I have you and your family in our prayers. Many hugs and positive thoughts for your dad.

Dogs and ribs and dining room tables...
It never ceases to amaze me how hectic a week can get. And I had been feeling so organized when I last posted...
On Tuesday we came home to two messy dogs. Bronwyn had decided to sample the contents of the kitty litter box on Sunday and wasn't really herself on Sunday night or Monday. Well, it all came out on Tuesday - from both ends! The crate was a mess and both dogs had been in it. Aidan spent more than an hour cleaning while I had both dogs in the bath tub. Two baths each and double duty blow drying resulted in a fluffy yet pissed off Ptolemy and a miserable and sick Bronwyn. We managed to have some dinner before we discovered that Bronwyn was still leaking from the back end. So it was back to the bath from Bronwyn, setting up separate crates for the dogs to sleep for the night and the beginning of our vigil to ensure that Bronwyn got enough water. Wednesday came and we were exhausted and the ribs on my right side were killing me.
The ribs were a pain (literally) on Wednesday. I made it through the day but by highland class time I was in agony. It felt like it was muscle related so I tried to stretch it out. Class was pretty good and after the little ones left we covered more new steps for our exam. As the night went on my energy diminished... as did my ability to deal with my achy rib. At home I had Aidan look at the area. It didn't look like anything was amiss. I struggled to find a comfortable sleeping position and hoped that my chiropractor could help on Thursday. And she did! Apparently, my back went into spasm with all of the bending over the tub on Tuesday. Two ribs on my right side were not in the correct position thanks to the muscle spasms in my back. So she stuck acupuncture needles in those spasming muscles and I just about died! I was so out of it when she finally took the needles out that I fell off of the table when I was supposed to get off of it... I felt so silly. Anyhow, as the day progressed the muscles started to relax and last night I put heat on the area. This morning I'm still sore but my ribs don't hurt nearly as much.
As if sick dogs and sore ribs aren't enough, our dining room table is at this moment sitting on top of the dining room chairs. It is so irritating. One of the legs was wobbly so Aidan took it off to take a look at it last night. Well, the second he removed it, the area where it connected fell apart - and the same happened with another leg. We were not impressed! So Aidan got online and sent a message to the manufacturer and in the meantime my table is sitting on the chairs... sigh.

Getting organized... or should I say catching up
I had a good day at work yesterday. I finally got rid of a project that had been hanging over my head. It was only a draft (#3) so I'll get it back but at least I can clear other stuff while they review it. I also felt good about upcoming projects due to the agenda for a status meeting that will be held tomorrow. While 'career' hasn't been my focus for a while now, I will say that I am at least happy that interesting work is in the pipeline. Who knows, I might be comfortable to think along the lines of career at some point without feeling like I am missing out on some other aspect of my life while doing it (I keep thinking law degree/public policy degree for some reason when I think career lately).
As for the degree I am working on, I am in avoidance mode. I have not done a lick of work since surgery time and lately have been concentrating on catching up at work. I need to sit down with my editor and go over the necessary changes and I also will have to schedule a class in Phoenix to stay in the program. On one hand I feel like I'm on the path to ABD - I am not motivated to finish. On the other hand, I've done so much already and really don't want to have to do years of coursework again when I am in the mood for a doctorate in the future. I'm torn but I also a bit freaked about the time and stress it'll take to get back on track.... I haven't sorted myself out in this area yet.
My closets are a mess and I really need to do a good toss out. I am motivated in this area because there's a clothing drive here for Haiti scheduled for Feb 6 and I can get rid of a lot of stuff that I am not using without much guilt. In mental preparation, I've been trying to change my work clothing habit (wearing more tailored outfits) in order to get rid of some of the shirts and more casual items that are taking up room. It might help to motivate me in working out too in order to keep some of the smaller sizes... we'll see. I sorted out my underwear drawer (somewhat) in December and need to the same for the rest.
As for exercise, until I'm 100%, Aidan has agreed to do workouts with me on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays (plus a walk on Sunday). Exercise initially will be modified for me and eventually will be more core work once March starts. I need to start working on the endurance now though because 1) it will help me to heal faster and 2) I need to be able to start dancing in March to be ready for exams in mid-April. I did go to Highland class last night and it was really good - I had energy until the end, was able to learn another exam step and didn't jump much. Wednesday's class should be easier. As for tonight's workout with Aidan - it's yoga!
Other than that, I'm already in a ready for spring state of mind. I want to be outside. I've spent so much of the last year inside for whatever reason that this year I want to enjoy the out-of-doors more. I told Aidan we need to get the kayak out in the Spring because since it was so hot to use it in the summer, we should get the most use out of it when the weather is warm. I think we also plan to walk all of the Railway trails this year for our Sunday walks - it is such a great way to see Bermuda!

Unplanned Sunday
Today was nice since it didn't go according to plan. The weather wasn't 100% after church so Aidan couldn't paint the door for the apartment. I had planned to sleep while he was out and then go to a prep class for my Highland Dancing teacher's exam in April. Since he was home, we cleaned a little, watched a little TV and relaxed. By the time we headed out we were pretty relaxed.
Class was ok. I was a week behind as I missed last week. We did grade 1 and some grade 2 theory. I have so much to learn and somehow I need to get my endurance up for the exam, that'll be about 1.5 hours. I think I'm also doing my Gold Highland and National exams so there is so much to do. And on the preparation side, I need to get these uniforms sorted out for all of the dancers...
Aidan was at my parent's house while I was in class, helping with a few electrical things. By the time I got there he was rewiring the guest bedroom light and fan. While he did that and then rebuilt the outdoor light, I set up my mom's wii and wii Fit. Once this was done it was getting late so my parents made dinner. We set up their wireless network and then had dinner while we watched 'Top Gear' (so much fun).
We're watching 'Heroes' season 3 tonight and cooling out with the dogs. I want to get to bed soon though because I'm in the midst of an interesting 'Torchwood' novel and I'd like to finish it before the week get's hectic. I'm back to 2 dance classes a week next week and even though I won't be dancing, it is tiring.

Musicals... a little planning.
We finished 'Glee'. We're still not too hot on aspects of the storyline but we found many of the musical numbers enjoyable. At the moment I can't get 'Don't Rain on My Parade' out of my head. it's to the point that we're watching 'Funny Girl' right now. I think the last time I watched it I was in college - but the songs, I'v loved many of them since I was a kid.
Since I'm on the Streisand kick, I got on youtube last night and pulled up everything from appearances on Judy Garland's show to a special that included Barry Gibb (I love 'Guilty'). That led to some Frank Sinatra and then some Liza Minelli, Judy Garland and Gene Kelly followed by Julie Andrews and ultimately Michael Crawford (Happy Belated 68th for January 19th). Since I adore 'Phantom' I started watching clips on how the stage production was put together, old tv segments on the show and a couple of concert clips. I also listened again to the new song and music from the sequel that's coming out this year (It's good, even though I'm not sure about the concept). It was quite an enjoyable night and I love youtube for letting me enjoy the experience!
All of this music love has us thinking about what we hope to see if we manage to get to London this year. In recent years we have seen an old favorite along with a new show. We haven't been to 'Phantom' since 2004 (the trip where we saw 7 shows in 10 days... heaven!!!) so it might be on the list. As for others, there's still 'Dirty Dancing' and 'Billy Elliot' from last year's list (we chose 'Jersey Boy's last September). 'Love Never Dies' is also on the list. We're looking at 'We Will Rock You', 'Grease', and 'Hairspray' but they're not a priority. Of course, this all depends on how long we'll be in London...

Healing
I find healing frustrating. Whether physical or mental, I've always just wanted to get on with it. This surgery experience has been nuts for me. I feel fine in my head - my body just doesn't agree. My doctor explained yesterday that my body is directing a lot of energy internally to heal my frankenstein uterus. In the last 3 weeks, I've been requesting extra energy to go to work, do stairs, try to lift light weights, etc. Since I'm not eating anything extra, my body needs more energy than there is fuel. So even though I'm eating regularly, I'm not eating enough... or enough of the right stuff... yeah, I'm irritated. In the meantime, I need energy and more rest. I wonder if I'll ever manage to catch up on everything.

January ICLW
Welcome to my little corner of the web!
Here's a little bit about my world:
Me - 35, independent consultant and dancer, 5+ years into a doctoral program in management (I need the motivation to work on the dissertation...), dx with polycyctic kidney disease (not affecting fertility) and fibroids (10 removed in December 09). I love MGM Musicals, theatre, Gene Kelly, Frank Sinatra, Audrey Hepburn, Doctor Who, Torchwood, Star Wars, Star Trek and dancing.
DH - 37, engineer, clairinet player and bagpiper, dx high prolactin levels and low motility. He loves marching and pipe bands, theatre, suspense novels, strategy games and good BBC programming.
Our Life - met in 1999 or 2000 (depends on who you speak to), dating in 2001, engaged in 2005, married in 2006 and began TTCing in 2007. Due to the fibroid removal surgery, we're on a TTC break until at least April 2010. We'll try on our own and are looking at doing IVF #2 in Boston in September if we're not successful. We've joined an IRL infertility support group and hopefully it'll make sense for us.
Other stuff - we have 2 cats and 2 dogs (CKCSs). We love to travel (it happens when you're stuck on a 21 square mile Island). We love Broadway and West End Shows. We both enjoy being onstage performing or backsage making the show happen. We're planners and that makes this whole IF thing suck royally.
We did our first IVF cycle in Czech Republic (we did not miss out on our annual vacation). It was an amazing experience and I wish we could go back for cycle #2. Unfortunately, we don't have 3.5 weeks to spend overseas this year thanks to my fibroid removal surgery and recovery. Additionally, I really hope we can have a non-medically related vacation this year. We really need it.
Life is kinda blah at the moment as I am still in recovery mode and having fun with crappy energy levels. I need to play catch up at work and school but I am so not motivated at the moment. I may try for Iron Commenter this month to give be a kick in the pants on the whole motivation thing...

One of those days
I'm having a 'meh' day. I don't have a hell of a lot of energy. It sucks since I need to finish two reports for tomorrow...
We got the package of info from B&W today. The folder is packed and it's almost scary - so many brochures, forms and even info on studies that are taking place. I flipped through everything and it brought me down a bit. I really don't want to do this anymore....
We've been watching 'Glee' on DVD. I didn't expect to like it but everyone who had seen it and knew me said Aidan and I would love it (yeah, really made us run to see it, right...). So I pre-ordered the DVD and forgot about it. We like the production numbers and adore some of the snarky writing. The story line is a bit irritating but we don't mind that much... it is turning into a pleasure to watch. It recently started showing in the UK so we're watching as to some of the songs are beginning to climb the charts (BBC Radio 1 anyway).

Creaky...
I started working on my arms and shoulders this weekend, thanks to my last chiropractor visit. It was a good idea on Saturday with the first workout. I felt good and my back loved it. Sure, I was a bit sore on Sunday but it was a nice sore. We'll, I was more than sore on Monday and had arms again last night. It felt good to work through the soreness and the workout was great. My triceps are crap! Anyhow, I was feeling pretty good before bed. This morning, not so much. I am so out of shape. I do have some mild yoga on tap for tonight and will get the arms moving again. All in all, it's a good start.
We had a good weekend in the garden. We took out the passion flower vine, weeded and added new soil to the beds. It took way longer than expected though and we didn't plant any bulbs. Perhaps we'll do it this coming weekend. As I was pulling apart the passion flower vine, I realised how little time I spent in the garden last year. I generally love my garden so it was odd to admit that I hardly did anything last year. Thank God for rose bushes. They're still blooming now, which is amazing. I don't plan any serious planting until March though so once the bulbs are in I'll just stick to weeding for a while.
In other news, AF #2 is here. It's less painful than last months but I do get some numb areas. The cramping is way less, volume is way less and consistency is what I now understand as normal. Yay! I'll be sick of this in a few months time but right now it is pretty cool. I did not start temping this month - just wasn't in the mood. I've contemplated getting an ovulation monitor but I don't know how much energy I want to put into April - August yet. I sorta just want some peace and quiet from TTCing and even with a plan, I find that the decisions have not settled down yet. Can I have my life back please???

Date Night!
Lunch Time!!!
I'm trying to work from home on Fridays so today is experiment day. So far, so good!
We had a lovely date night last night. We got a series of gift certificates for Christmas so we decided to go out to dinner at one of the 6 restaurants that the certificates covered. We went to The Harbourfront and were seated in the sushi section - so no harbour views but on such a cold night we didn't mind. I ordered the bento box because it had a bit of everything - tuna, eel and salmon sashimi, shrimp tempura, stir fried veg, salad, spicy tuna roll, california roll and a really nice miso & sake marinated pan fried fish (can't remember the name). Aidan has cream of spinach soup followed by a combo (excellent portion sizes though) that included peppercorn steak, pork loin with fried apple and grilled lamp chops with sauted spinach and a potato cake. It was lovely and we ate way too much - including dessert. Next month we'll use the second certificate at another restaurant and in March the 3rd. Something to look forward to! After dinner, we were so lazy. I'm glad we didn't go to the movies. Aidan did some work on the computer and I read before going to sleep. Such a nice night!
I'm hoping for some gardening time this weekend. I have bulbs to put in and I need to put fresh soil in the flower beds. We also need to get some fertilizer. Perhaps we'll do that after I go for my hair appointment tomorrow morning.

Getting back to my regularly scheduled life!
Today was my first chiropractor visit since March last year. It was painful but excellent!!! I knew things would be really badly out of alignment and I was correct. She had to deal with my neck, upper back, lower back, hips, knees, arms, pelvis and shoulders. Thankfully, when all was done I felt great. My hips feel amazing! I have to go back in 10 days and then I can do monthly maintenance. Thank God for my Chiropractor.
I went to Highland dancing last night. I cannot jump but I was able to do some of the movements and help in instructing the class. It was frustrating and I ran out of energy 3/4 of the way through but it was good to get moving. I've also begun doing 15 minutes each night on my pilates machine at home (last night was night 2). I haven't done anything that focuses on my abs but when it is time for that I am hoping my endurance will be better. Back to the dancing though - we're implementing an exam programme starting in April. We'll have an examiner coming down from Toronto to test the dancers and they would receive medals for the level that they're at. I'm supposed to be taking my Gold Highland and the Associates (Teacher) exams. At this point, I may be able to only do the theory for the teacher's exam since I can't start dancing until March - hence my desire to start building my endurance now. So I'm more than a little frustrated because I really want to just do these exams and be done with them. Who knows what I'll be dealing with in April 2011... So I'm going to the extra teacher training classes on Sundays and I hope that the exams will be towards the end of April...

Looks like we have a plan...
We had a really good discussion last night now that we have all of the information. Adding in unpaid leave if we were to go back to CZ, this year it would be more expensive as compared to last year when we used vacation (not an option this year due to the fibroid removal operation). We're stuck with our usual vacation allocation and if we have to use part of it for IVF, we don't want to have to use all of it. So unpaid leave puts CZ up to Norway levels and that number gave us peace of mind in our decision between Norway and Boston. So we began the discussion. We went over the pros and cons of both, complained about how both options are more than we really want to spend and finally settled on keeping the date as September to give us 6 months to try on our own.
With the IVF as our back-up, we decided on Boston. Going to Boston means that it is easier to schedule for both of us, particularly if Aidan cannot come for the whole time - he'd only have to be there on the last 5 days. Unfortunately, choosing Boston will mean PIO shots but hopefully we won't get that far (Think Natural - Think Natural!!!). Anyhow, we've gone back to our doctor and we can get in contact in August to get the process rolling if we need to. Our classes will be done online and our biggest issue is getting the meds (I might be able to get it through my doctor's office... I hope).
So hopefully, that'll be it for now. We're now focused on the getting into optimum condition for April - August. I'm now 5 weeks post-op so I can add some gentle yoga and pilates soon (thank god). No jumping up and down yet though.... I'll talk about my frustrations with that later! It's great to have a proper plan though. Now I need to focus on school work.... sigh...

We gotta do this naturally!!!!
I was pretty excited when I got into the office and had tons of info in my inbox from Boston to help with our decision on where to go this year. I sent my thank yous to those who emailed us, opened up my spreadsheet and began entering estimated costs for hotels, airfare, IVF with ICSI, meds, food and ground transportation. I pulled information for Boston, Norway and CZ. The sinking feeling began as the totals began to appear. Our best option is.... to go back to CZ. It is way cheaper than either option with is a total PITA since I don't have 25 days to spend in CZ this year.
Looking at timing, Boston will require that I stay out there for 14-15 days. Norway would be a total of 17 days but it would be 6 days in June and 11 days in September. The major costs for Boston are the IVF with ICSI and the meds. The major costs for Norway are airfare and food (and housing somewhat). In the end, Norway is about $2500 to 3000 cheaper than Boston but I didn't include sightseeing, souvenirs and gas for the car so Norway may be a wash if we do it this way. And if we do Boston, chances are we still can't do Ireland because being there for 2 weeks leaves us with maybe a bit more than a week of vacation - which isn't nearly enough for a relaxing visit... sigh.
So we're hoping we can do this on our own before we have to commit to anyone. CZ was a no brainer because it used our vacation budget without any issues. Norway and Boston go way above and beyond that as we'd probably have to double our vacation budget for one cycle. If we have to do it, we're leaning towards Boston because it may be easier to coordinate. I told Aidan that at least we'd have Norway in 2011.....

Back to Boston???
We decided yesterday to contact Brigham & Women's in order to consider cycling with them this year. We're interested in it as a back-up because (1) the RE would be my fibroid removal doctor so she'd develop the protocol accordingly; (2) Boston is much closer than Norway and a bit less expensive for food and transport and (3) I'd probably end up there in a high-risk problem situation. So I contacted my coordinator because I needed my operative report sent to my nephrologist and asked her about the process and cost. She gave me the basic information and provided me with an additional contact person. That contact is speaking to my fibroid removal doctor and has also requested that the financial person get in touch with me. Initial numbers from my coordinator indicate that the cost for a cycle in Norway and a cycle in Boston will be somewhat close. Still, we do not know how much ICSI and the meds will cost - and that may make it unrealistic as an option. Still, we like having it as an option so who knows... we'd definitely cycle earlier if we decide to go to Boston. And Ireland in September may still be an option.....
As for the nephrologist visit, my weight was up slightly (3 lbs) so he wants me to walk more to keep my weight down leading up to March. He said he'd prefer that I not kill myself trying to 'get back into shape'. I understand his point. I've already screwed up my back from.... STRETCHING!!! I'm off to the chiropractor on Thursday for that. My iron was low. I've asked to up my iron supplement and it looks like I can take it with lunch. He said it will take a while for the levels to get back to normal... Everything else was ok, thank God!
I am so looking forward to March - I want to get back to working out and dancing so badly!!!!!

Nice Slow Weekend
We haven't been doing much except watching tv shows on DVD. We did manage to go out on Thursday for date night to see 'Avatar' - that was fun! We've been watching 'Heroes' predominately but I did manage to watch 3 episodes of 'Glee' on Friday.
Yesterday I had a massage thanks to one of the many gift certificates that I have received over the last year. I had some major knots in my shoulders and my back is a mess. I think I am going to need to see my chiropractor because my back is a mess! Anyhow, the massage wasn't nearly as relaxing as my acupuncture visit. I also didn't really like the spa's atmosphere... it was nicely decorated but it didn't feel relaxing. I'd go again with another gift certificate but I don't think I'd go on my own dollar.
AF is due next week and I am suffering somewhat as I wait for it to start. I have a constant ache in my belly. I hope the cramps don't hurt as much as last month. A healing uterus doesn't like to move much...
Aidan and I have been doing our Norway research today. We've been looking at weather, travel options from the UK, car rental and accommodations. We've found info on an acupuncturist but we're thinking we're going to have to contact him to see how he works. So it looks like we're going to schedule the consult for June.
I also want to research Boston at Brigham and Women's again. I am still concerned about the price but I'm thinking that we need some info as there is a chance as a high risk person that I might end up there for a few examinations when pg..... I might email my coordinator for some info...
I have enjoyed the delurking posts - particularly since I know so many of you!!!!! :) Thanks for the love!!!!

Back to Work
Today was my first day back at work. It wasn't too bad. the office was cold so I sat on my heating pad all day. I went out for a shot of wheatgrass before lunch but I still hit the proverbial wall at around 1pm. However, I spaced out my meals and snacks by 3 hours so I was able to refuel and get through the rest of the day. In the end, my first day since the surgery without a nap. I am dragging now though...
As today is the 10th day of Christmas, I took the decorations down tonight. I hope Aidan will get the lights off of the tree and out of the house tomorrow night. Then the cleaners can make sure all of the needles, etc are gone on Wednesday. I'll miss the tree with it's beautiful lights but Christmas is less than a year away!
It's been a great day for me getting organized. There are three projects that I'd like to finish this week and then I will feel much better. Other than that, I feel much more organized than I've been in a long time. Aidan said the same as we drove home tonight. Nice!
As for our quest, tomorrow is my first acupuncture visit post-surgery. I know my acupuncturist will be focusing somewhat on preventing/slowing regrowth of the fibroids but he'll also need to help with getting my cycle back to normal over the next few months. It probably means that I'll need to start charting soon ... sigh. I hate charting!

Here's to a Healthy, Prosperous and AMAZING 2010!!!
We had a very restful first day of 2010. We didn't even get out of our pajamas. I watched Doctor Who all day but Aidan did finish entering the last bit of 2009 data into MS Money. The second day of 2010 appears that it will be similar since we have high winds today - so much for planting bulbs in the yard. Still, Doctor Who is on all day....
We heard back from the clinic in Norway today. I had previously sent my operative report from the fibroid removal surgery for my file. We're tentatively looking at doing the consultation visit (2 days) in May or June and cycling in September. That would give us a few months to try on our own once we get the green light to get started on March 31. If we're successful on our own, we plan to go to Ireland for our annual vacation. If not, we'll be spending 10 days in Norway. As you can guess, I am hoping we can do it on our own because I really, really want to go to Ireland (we're supposed to go to Norway in 2011 on a coastal cruise for Aidan's dad's 70th b-day, so we'd eventually get there).
